The exhibition “Tea, Coffee or Chocolate?” at the Museum Cognacq-Jay is rich despite its compactness. The exhibition presents the rise of ‘exotic’ beverages in 18th century Europe, from the origins in international commerce to the gradual integration in the daily routines of Europeans.
The curatorial content of the exhibition was interesting, but what really caught my attention were the details in the artworks. I am a sucker for a good teacup, and there was a parade of ornate teaware (and images of people using said teaware).
Pop'Up Café
The exhibition has ideas for continuing your experiences beyond the galleries. The mobile app offers four recipes from the period, with updated versions so you can try them at home.
If you visit the museum on the weekend, a pop-up café in the courtyard offers you the opportunity to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and nibble on a square of chocolate, in the sunshine. Alas, after visiting an exhibition full of splendid porcelain, I was ever so slightly disappointed that the pop-up café served up my hot beverage in a paper teacup.
